Bob Ryan ‘68

Bob Ryan, the famous Boston Globe columnist among numerous other things, worked at what was then WVBC from 1964-1968.  He was the play-by-play man for the men’s basketball team, having won an audition conducted by doing a scrimmage between BC and, a Syracuse team that featured Hall of Famers Dave Bing and Jim Boeheim in the backcourt. The game tipped off at 9:30 AM on a Saturday!  Ryan also did some sports shows, as well as some rock ’n’ roll DJing for the student radio station.  Mr. Ryan also worked for The Heights during his student days at BC.

Bob Wischusen ‘93

Bob Wischusen was a member of WZBC Sports from 1989-1993, serving as sports director during the 1992-1993 school year.  He called football, basketball, and hockey games.  In addition, he did sports updates during the music shifts and hosted the hour long sports talk show ZBC Sports had (then on Monday nights).  Two of Mr. Wischusen’s favorite memories from his days with ZBC sports are calling the BC-Penn State football game in 1992, when BC beat the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley, as well as, announcing the Beanpot three years in a row in the old Boston Garden.  There, Wischusen saw a plethora of future NHL stars, including Tony Amonte, Shawn McEachern, Jay Pandolfo, Paul Kariya, Bill Guerin, Marty McInnis, and Steve Heinz.  After BC, Wischusen worked with WQAM in Miami, and then WFAN in New York City.  Currently, he serves as the radio play-by-play man for the New York Jets, and also calls games for the Knicks, Rangers, and Liberty for MSG TV and 1050 ESPN Radio in New York City.  Mr. Wischusen also broadcasts about 40 events a year for ESPN—mostly of the college football and basketball variety.

Jon Rish ‘94

Rish was a member of ZBC Sports from 1990-1994.  He started out at ZBC Sports doing sports updates on VBC.  Eventually, he moved up the ranks and became sports director during the spring and fall semesters of 1993.  By far, his favorite game was the 1993 Notre Dame-Boston College football game in South Bend.  In that game, David Gordon kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired to give the Eagles a 41-39 win and a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated.  For Notre Dame, the game ended their hopes for a national championship.  Mr. Rish believes his most important contribution was getting ZBC Sports the two spots on the football charter flight to the away games, which had been taken away years earlier.  ZBC Sports still has these spots on the charter flight today.  Until the spring of 1993, when he convinced the athletic department to open two spots, the members of ZBC Sports had to make their own travel plans—which was costly and difficult.  Currently, Rish works for Entercom in Boston.  He is the studio host for the Boston Red Sox radio network and hosts the Red Sox Review post-game show on WEEI.  In addition, Mr. Rish is the play-by-play voice of Boston College hockey.  He was an analyst for BC hockey from 1997 to 1998, then took over the play-by-play duties the next year.  Before accepting his current position at Entercom, Mr. Rish worked as a freelancer for ESPN Radio for six years.

Jon Sciambi ‘92

Sciambi was a member of ZBC Sports from 1990-1992, alongside the likes of Wischusen and Rish.  Mr. Sciambi believes the best part of his time at ZBC was simply getting a chance to be on the air, talking sports, and hanging out with friends.  Sciambi still keeps in contact with many members of the department.  Right now, he hosts a daily sports talk show on 790 The Ticket in Miami.  In addition, he does about 90 games for Atlanta Braves television, as well as college basketball and baseball for ESPN TV and Radio.
